Today is the day! The month-long period to apply for big game hunts in Utah begins today and runs through March 1st. I wanted to post a few items and links here again today as I still receive a lot of questions about the application system and period. Here are some things to consider:
There are a lot of big changes to deer hunting in Utah this year...have you looked into those changes? There are also a few changes to other hunts. You can find most of the details on these changes on a blog post from a couple of weeks ago: http://www.suhuntandfish.com/2012/01/2012-utah-big-game-draw.html
A lot of us will apply early on, then as the application period wears on second thoughts set in! Maybe you realize that you wanted to hunt that unit with a different weapon, or you found another unit entirely that now looks more appealing. On the flip side, many people wait until the end, then actually miss getting their applications in due to forgetting the date that the application period will close on. Plain and simple the best thing to do is come up with a plan, stick to it, and apply earlier in the process. Steve Barker explains the importance of planning when it comes to hunting in another previous blog post: http://www.suhuntandfish.com/2012/01/youll-run-out-of-time-before-you-run.html
Here are some other events on the radar that might interest you. For more information visit the "News and Events" tab:
This Saturday, February 4th is the 2nd annual Panguitch Lake Ice Fishing Derby. Entry fees from this tournament benefits the families of fallen wildland firefighters. Proceeds will go to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. The fun will begin at the North Shore boat ramp at 9:00 AM, weigh in will be at 2:00 PM. If nothing else, please come out to enjoy good friends, food, and donate to enter a raffle for outdoor prizes!
One last item, the application period for elk and pronghorn in Arizona is nearly over. You have until February 14th to apply for these to species. Click the link for more details: http://azgfd.net/artman/publish/WildlifeNews/Wildlife-News---Jan-27-2012.shtml
February is shaping up to be a very busy, but very fun month for outdoors enthusiasts! Many mulies around here have been dropping antlers! It sounds like a lot of folks are hitting the field in the weeks to come in search for a few shed horns. Be sure to share your finds with us! As for the blog, in the weeks to come you can expect to see ice fishing trips, shed hunting, and I am thrilled to be heading out on a overnight fishing trip with Timberline Range Camps! Do you remember those old sheep camp trailers? Timberline is still building those rugged, comfortable wonders, and will join me at Fish Lake, Utah where we will not only try our hand on the ice for a few days, but I will be able to share a review of the range camp with you. Stay tuned!
